Alejandro Gaviria is a Colombian economist, engineer, and public intellectual with a career spanning government, academia, and policy research. He served as Minister of Health and Social Protection (2012–2018) and later as Minister of National Education (2022–2023), leading national reforms in healthcare and education.
He was Rector of the University of Los Andes from 2019 to 2021, following earlier roles as Dean of Economics and senior advisor at Colombia’s National Planning Department, Fedesarrollo, and the Inter-American Development Bank.
In 2021, he ran as a presidential candidate, earning broad recognition for his independent, progressive platform focused on social equity, education, and public health.
A widely published author and speaker, Gaviria is known for his humanistic, data-driven approach to leadership. He lives in Bogotá, Colombia, where he continues to contribute to public discourse and academic life.
